The report of the 1st symposium (summary) 12 Mar., 2016
ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB held the memorial symposium cosponsored by the Nagoya University graduate school of International Development. It was our honor to cohost the symposium with Nagoya University graduate school of International Development.
Here we would like to introduce the summary of each lecture in the symposium.
1- Keynote Lecture by Mr. Hirotaka Yamakawa, Jiji Research Institute Guest Researcher
“A trend of Japanese firms in ASEAN countries”
ASEAN area has a population of 600 million people, which is 5 times larger than Japan, and is even larger than EU.
This time he talked about Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
Since 2012 the number of investments of Japanese firms has been increasing because, he thinks, its political and economic reforms have progressed and the media has been liberalized.
The average wage is around 10,000 JPY, one third of which in Thailand.
Myanmar is favorably situated, bordering with China, India, Bangladesh, Thailand and Laos, and has become the market of 2.7 billion people.
Also, they are rich in natural resources, oil, natural gas, copper, gold and tin.
The literacy rate is 92%, about as same as Vietnam and Indonesia, and the grammar of Burmese language is rather close to Japanese, which makes Burmese people easier to learn Japanese.
On the other hand, there are still some problems to be solved.
The biggest problem they have is shortage of electric power and human resource.
However, considering that Myanmar had stronger economic strength than Thailand before the military regime, they will make up for their lost time soon.
The number of auto production in 2012 is 2.45 million, which is the ninth largest number in the world.
Now the economy is not as good as before, but the living standard of Thai people is almost same as people in Japan.
There are so many of Japanese retail shops, like Family Mart, Kinokuniya, Uniqlo, and Ramen restaurants, and also Japanese banks. You can buy almost anything you want from Japan.
The possible disadvantages for Japanese firms to invest are the increase of labor wage. Also, they sometimes suffer from the flooding and have a political instability.
They also have many Japanese retail shops and restaurants in Ho Chi Min. They now have the population of 90 million people, which is increasing and soon become larger than the population in Japan.
However, the number of the investments from Japan has not increased much recently and now the largest investor is Korean companies since 2014.
Now AEON is open in Phnom Penh. It is expected that the number of visitors from Japan, both travelers and business people will increase because the direct flight from Narita to Phnom Penh is going into service in September 2016.
The labor wage has been increasing and now the average is around 20,000 JPY.
They can provide abundant electric power not only inside the country but also to Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand.
Because of the difference of the wage, people tend to work in the neighbor countries, and so it can be difficult to employ enough people.
2- About “ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB” reported by Secretary-General Hisaya Matsuhisa
Our starting point was the discussion we had in the summer of 2014, which we doubted there are many Japanese who understand and judge accurately the ASEAN countries. We came to think that it is important that we learn the culture and tradition of the partner country to establish a good relationship in business, and we have decided to start this club.
Many foreign people say that Japanese are cold-hearted, too strict and inflexible whereas we often get a good reputation for our kindness, politeness or loyalty.
We are discussing each culture, tradition and way of thinking with the students from ASEAN countries to find out what we want for each other not only to develop the economic relationship but also to have a good relationship in the future.
3- Presentation by Mr. Indra Kesuma Nasution from Indonesia
He thinks that ASEAN countries now have a big chance for their development by forming the AEC, but there isn’t a country who has a strong leadership. To develop more strongly, ASEAN countries need Japan who could be the engine of their economy.
He says “ASEAN economic will not moving anywhere without Japan. Japan economic will not progress further without ASEAN. Why don’t we drive to the better future together? It is now for us to decide.”
4- Presentation by Mr. Lim Lyhong from Cambodia
He has learned mainly 3 things by participating the Club.
The first is the real Japan and its historical background. The second is the Japanese way of thinking, which he could never learn by just studying in university. And the third is the knowledge about the other ASEAN countries.
What he thinks the international students should do to create a better relationship between his country and Japan are to become a mediator between the countries or a contact person of ASEAN countries. And to do that, he thinks that the international students should learn and understand more about both their countries and Japan, and at the same time, should build the network of the students from ASEAN countries.
5- the video letter from Mr Pak Chanlino, the lawyer in Cambodia who graduated from the Club in 2015
Letter from abroad OB
We 3 persons secretary-general of our club went to the Cambodia.
Cambodian studentsby 2015 November, graduatedASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB is 8 people. Among them, are graduates of the master's degree is three. In July of this year's Chanlino-san , in October, Sreyden-san, and graduated last October, Monin-san.
The purpose of the visit confirmed their status, and Chanlino lawyer office opening celebration was.
Mr.Matsuhisa, Mr.Haruna, and Ms.Minoura participated from the Secretariat. Cambodia started during the dry season, mornings and evenings are pleasant, although strong sunshine during the day, sunglasses, a hat and comfortable. For 3 people, Cambodia's land for the first time. Cambodia remained strongly negative legacy of the Pol Pot era, taken up as one of the poorest countries in the world.
However, visited the capital Phnom Penh, already economic development in early stages. It was as if difficult to wipe away a little. Feel the city full of vibrant, citizens do something and the market economy, what is the investment and understanding is progressing steadily. Aeon Mall opened last year, the shop is full of consumers to shop with gusto, feel whole nation ran into a full-fledged consumer society. However, city are given stress traffic jams due to delays in transportation infrastructure, specific country.
Visited Cambodia was a peaceful expression of the people remained very strong. Peoplewho knew the appeal of consumer society in the early stages of economic development, the greed came to the table, the action becomes active. However, was giving a strange feeling quiet and peaceful during the hustle and bustle of people. May has been the depth of faith as a Buddhist country. Losing an important spirit, along with economic development in any country, but if progress remains with the serene expression, must become an attractive country.
Now, in one purpose visited Chanlino-san's lawyers offices and partners lawyers held a meeting. Similar to Sreyden-san , Monin-san , your great talent! Most memorable is the precious spirit of the current Japanese lost. Students will have to get a job abroad in countries leading companies. One of the staff from France back "I will come back. Who makes them instead of a lost generation, we make the country, " that will have heard. It is actually accepted by the ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB students all eight have this ambition. Give wisdom to this country, that was deeply impressed.
Accompanied by contemporaries, Mr.Haruna,Ms.Minoura, and exciting.
Graduated from ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB, to imagine after 10 to 20 years with his heart and strength, they will devote themselves to the development of the country , is really expected.
Chanlino-san lawyer plays bridge with Japan, and ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB local Cambodian representative as well. The fruitful activity of the students, just pray.

The 13th meeting report (summary) 2015 August 27.
ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB also went into the second year. This month we will focus on "public and private". Is related to the theme of Seniority may be cited from the old Japan, consider the structure of the "public and private". Went up from ASEAN students Japanese story is how the truth difficult to understand the question.
[Public and private]
See how our nation's food ? "With questions, see tasty Japanese?" answered, but "food is eaten much remains that is. It is of doubt that they think is really not good. I will be filling and tastes really good, but now I cannot eat that. However, many people thought the opponent stands fit inside the mouth, even the cryptic response is Japanese.
We had came in the island nation's long history. You can't escape to other areas, conflicts and wars. In the country is limited, not live "happily". Yamato is a large sum and writes. Prince Shotoku, since historically has been important to Japanese. Seal has been disturbing the harmony, in means of ostracism, to harmonize the regional force. Habits differ from the truth of their relationship with the other party, to make sure the operas may have.
If having a daily truth alone, conflict happens always. Public and private is, Japanese only?. We exchange views with ASEAN students.
From the students is supposedly caring about the human mind, Laos and Indonesia. Is not in the country . I get the opinion said. The Japanese expression of other opinions, but the people of any country are sacrificing the relationship is normal and does not hurt, and supposedly became aware that not trying to.
There was discussion that there is a special phenomenon, however, found only in Japan. It is a “meeting”. It is a meeting to solve problems. It is a very logical. To discuss, with the intention to resolve the issue. It was pointed out that tend to use public and private Japanese fear of damaging the human relationships, even this critical meeting. Referred to as boss and people older than your opponent, even if ASEAN is, to solve problems in the advance in the truth. In this regard, Japan thank you respecting human relationships for Conference participants, the tendency to hesitate to say the truth, yet there seems to be.
But that bet on the future is totally impenetrable to do use a Conference when considering the increasingly progress of technological innovation and globalization, the Japanese went, such as public and private, was also a common view from the OB . Certainly much less in that sense, Japan Society also use public and private (tatemae and honne)
[on Time] From the students about punctuality questions such as the following. Japanese society is built on the exact time. Not only the students, thoroughly surprised people abroad, the exact time in the transit system. Japan Society, every detail abounds at that precise time. In questions of the students was something concrete. "When he promised the Japanese, I go long ago the specified location?", that was a very specific problem.
Is a Japanese OB says. In Japan also, punctual people. A punctual person, but there are people who do not, but most. Only punctual, he lose the credit's Japan society. If so, where is the turning point. This is the conclusion. It is 5 minutes. Just-in-time is ideal, but it's hard. Where the width is allowed? It embarrasses it is never late for bad, but too soon. The annoying come 20 minutes early. However, the more annoying than 20 minutes late. So when you call. The turning point was majority opinion that "5 minutes". Japan Society, late there seems aware that up to 5 minutes. After this meeting, ASEAN students, at a later meeting, "clean 5 minutes ago" to now arrive.
Finally, "seems so things look like they take no risk, take time to prepare, but they don't take risks. Why is this? ", that there was a question. Investment attitude from Japan to your home country, such as you feel it is. Other Asian countries are investing actively without taking time for preparing. However, I felt very slow on Japan investment. What is the difference?
View common in overseas investment officer, Commander undertook OB was something like the following. Investment behavior, comes great responsibility. To invest, not to immediately stop work. Will more investment and do business. Many stakeholders other than shareholders '. Must be made substantial preparation for accountability to them. In addition, salaried managers is almost. It is said that very few investment consultation type from the realities of the current Japan business. OB's view was largely concerned is relatively shallow, often owner-managers, investors in other Asian countries, the history of economic development compared to Japan.

The 12th meeting report (summary) 2015 July 30
ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB is one year old. Gathering of Nagoya University OB, passing the baton to the next generation. These international relations are international human relationships. International relations without mutual trust is fragile. OB has felt importance of international relationship through many years of overseas activities. It is often impossible to move on during his career with the intention of Japan head office. It is there are probably still regrets aspects could not help business on the solid relationships. I think OB want to achieve a real interaction was reflecting on the career is.
What you can do OB? It is not, the students are coming in far away Japan came all the way from overseas to tell the true nature of Japan? Only academic learning and return to their home country. Studying in Japan, with just over a year to return home. Back to housing and University, not knowing Japan. Such students are often.
Must just say when they arrived at the positions in their home countries in the future, has studied abroad in Japan, as a "Pro-Japanese". However, it may become a "Pro-Japanese" with the Japanese without knowing what the Japanese are exactly what you think and how to grasp things and reliable friend No.
What is true in Japan？ What is the Japanese way of thinking? To understand Japan through relationships can exchange views frankly. Students do not have a deep understanding, that slot to fill. OB is intended raise Pro-Japanese in the true. ASEAN will rapidly with force students to want to provide such opportunities. Started by such a thought.
I think is heading in that direction and over the year, has little by little. We aim to bridge between next generation of Japan and ASEAN students.
ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB 1 tried by summary of the anniversary.
1) Do not tend to return home, past the surface of Japan Society and Japanese,
through monthly seminar and dinner participating students could touch a little bit on the depths of the Japanese.
2) Functioning as a place of exchange among ASEAN students.
3)Could provide a certain positive perspective to the Japan society through spiritual support comes from the mind of OB in.
4)Discussing great Japan society and the challenges, both sides objectively the grew up versed in the true.
1) How to ensure the quality of the dialogue, to ensure the quality of the dialogue scale, while we think.
2) Realization of equal opportunity in ASEAN 10 countries.
3) Japanese students joined up.
4) ASEAN CLUB Participants, ongoing support after returning home.
5 ) Junior students to current students, with recommendations.
After conference to sum up,the monthly meeting was held.
The theme of July is collectivism and individualism. Japanese do not collectivism. We've heard questions such as the following from the students. "Well said the Japanese group in principle, individualism is Europe and America people.
For example, frequently said Japanese than his first work for the company hard. And there, not too much against President said. As a result, strikes, not in Japan. In contrast, Westerners for nation or company always's often claim rights.
1 example is France people. And France who, if if you did not meet the company against their wishes, often strike has said. In fact,2014 Air France pilots protested against the airline company's services expand, into the strike, more than half the flights.
But,the students think Japanese is different
It seems many people during the Japanese think their national collectivist. However, not much is the place to discuss or review a proof. A good opportunity for the Japanese.
Comments from Japanese OB collectivism was like.
Collectivism may be in the current situation, to enhance the cooperation of the organizations made a collective sum. That is, a focus group coordination before claiming to members when you configure the groups that may be different with Western values.
As one example, came out talking about the relationship between companies and unions. Begin with the Union is a counterweight to corporate. However, the concept of Association were adopted from abroad, but was transformed in Japan. Words such as a company Union is the unions and corporations move in a coordinated manner. Union Chairman experienced executives would structures is a phenomenon in Japan. Thinking of seeking a way to coexist, but corporations and unions over the conflict is very strong is. It is at first glance, comes a collective national identity.
However, was also controversial. 1960 absorbed from the OB have experienced rapid growth, at the time, and they do the hard job, keep up the family also have to sacrifice, pointed out that all Japan corporate realitiy was busy. It was not diligent in for loyalty to the company. Big incentive increases every year salary at that time was also at work.
That has changed a lot its sight further down the age, have been exchanged. Today, from bubble burst after a period of low growth, there are no incentives of salary rises, seniority would crumble, may have faded over the years, the real element of company loyalty and collectivism. One might even get the impression that the group already, compared to other countries, there is a clear difference it seems.
Cambodia Chanlino Claus-san, decided to return home, and completed the master's program. 1 year in attendance, he learned a lot about non-academic Japan culture and way of thinking. Lawyer, to the United Nations before studying in Japan, 1 year study abroad experience changed greater life. With a dream, after returning the firm to launch the bridge between Cambodia and Japan.
In ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB,dinner party after the seminar was the most learned. Can discuss with Japanese and foreign students, it became his property.
I hope you contribute development of his country.

The 10th meeting report(summary) 5.28.2015
We deeply considered themes suggested by students starting this month. Series "Cross culture meeting" was held in December last year. May 's theme is "Seniority".
In general society, say "seiniority", "mechanism of young and old". Speaking at the corporate world, "seniority"? Divided into two parts of the general public, the business community and discussed.
Students summarized the native seniority . In the table below is a personal understanding, is not generalizations from the seniority of the native features of each country you can see. Again, including Japan we can have
common values in Asia.
Copyright (C) 2015 ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB Yuki Shimazu All Rights Reserved...
Respect to superiors in the general community, are common every ASEAN countries. Feel try examples such as Cambodia parents have decision-making regarding child marriage, Myanmar prevail among the children, older authority, Laos power and age are closely related, and supposed to be rather vague preliminary grades of modern Japan.
On the other hand, in corporate world according to the process of conomic development approach to seniority among ASEAN countries uniform isn't seems. Myanmar and Laos seems of seniority that focuses on age and experience. Indonesia also same.
But,Thailand has nealy ability system,as he has developed economy earlier than other ASEAN countries. Cambodia is interesting. Compared with other countries in the general public is seniority , but in the corporate world ability widespread seems. Awareness among people, in enterprises and general public that applies for the seniority is truly interesting.
Know that ASEAN seniority thus to represent respect for superiors in general society. On the other hand, seniority in the corporate world seems to vary from country to country seniority and ability.
Now, debated on Japan's seniority . There is no big difference in general society, but in the social enterprise (Organization) seniority , may not quite understand and opinions of many. Students said corporate society is mysterious world.
Work experience is a student's opinion. If he says leader, seniors with questions, they does not have a listen because ways from before.
Also, teachers and seniors students will fear it seems to enforce a behavior with advice for new students of the atmosphere.
Have strange students question is why liberal opinions about logical that it is. Students feel Japanese people behavior is reflected is not logical.
Answer this question? It is difficult to answer we Japanese people often. I'd like the wisdom of the ancestors there, was referring to the social structure of the Japan society. Ms. Nakane Chie "vertical socialrelationships" (Kodansha new book contemporary) is one of examples.
In old times we used strong pecking order social superiors unconditionally follow the culture. This example of a world as pointed out that a special country. In other words, not only to pay respect to the older people, would leave older people also thought that is.
Has said, went back to the international community after World War II, along with the economic development process, people was afraid of Japanese not said nothing at the International Conference. From the Japan of today is a freak. However, such phenomena is still seen everywhere.
According to Ms. Nakane Chie, moral rather than a religious community with a values-driven relationship between people and people. Namely, in guiding thoughts of self and interpersonal self position scale. … And shall refrain from rebuttal as a retort in Japan, and is boycotted as a pecking order. In Japan, as well as a superficial action, even ago the announcement of the thoughts and opinions strongly ruled pecking order sense.
Nitobe Inazo's Bushido trying to supplement this point a little bit.
"Even if people has talent, academic, he can not live in the world without moderation.Social unit of family only, and Senior is evaluated more thanexcellent talent senior.
Watching the Samurai spirit inherited today's enterprises, Mr.Konosuke Matsushita gives instruction in the following words, will tell you. "Old samurai warrior comes with was trying to be honorable. Thus, not only strong warriors, Samurai Warriors are indispensable best as human beings. Also learning much, humanity is rich should be. … Should become strong, and fighting. Samurai spirit that was to combine those things, I think, and there is also had a respected Samurai spirit of why I think.
And so on, is a cultural assumption senior people must be excellent in all aspects, people obey older people’s order.
Senior people today, however, necessarily isn't universal. May this premise is crumbling. And thus do we reflected in increasingly strange, illogical form students understanding is difficult.
I think for various reasons are, of course, the illogical thinking of Japanese still has. As we Japanese will have to act further globally, I believe students pointed out that becomes a valuable asset for us.

The 8th meeting report (summary) 3.26.2015
Our Club celebrates 8 times. Everyone consisted of dialogue in order to reflect themes of the past in this area and further enhance our content.
Students is what you desire, Japan side is what message they give. Accurately discern students needs to develop the ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB , based on their needs our OB support through dialogue is very important. Today, we review all.
Past seven times content divided into four categories.
(1) Want to convey native on the Japan side
(2) Want to know concept of culture and traditions of Japan ,Japanese
(3) Want to know about companies in Japan.
(4) Want to convey dream after returning, want consultation.
Also,we reconfirm the goals established for the ASEAN-NAGOYA CLUB , shown below.
1) Have become ASEAN students correctly underst Japan's culture and tradition.
2)Through exchanges centered on Nagoya University OB with Japanese students,
Japan companies, build trust with ASEAN students will be business leaders of ASEAN countries , even after returning home, lasting support.
Contents of the dialogue so far was filled with students alike a Japan side, valuable information. I get ideas based on these achievements, publications. However, the wide world who tell became a common understanding while recognizing that important and that this meeting in fact existence itself, unique value. More and more how your expectations should be.
Also, it is important debate to build on top of that, firmly grip the student needs to further enhance the dialogue in the future, as noted at the beginning. Decides to submit the theme reflected in subsequent meetings from this viewpoint, from students.
As an example of the theme you wish, we talked about serious themes why not abroad of Japanese students and ASEAN students don't realize exchange. Student has mastered the language of Japan, for a long time period but can't exchange with Japanese students. Seem always staying together Japanese students who has no overseas experience is no division with Japanese students has overseas experience, but not trying to ommunicate
with ASEAN students. In the era of globalization, yet exclusive Japanese DNA still have been handed down as it is. This theme is this year firmly debate would like to.
It is this meeting to discussing openly ASEAN students wonder about the Japan society and student days,we again recognize plays a very important function as a bridge between Japan and ASEAN .

The 7 th meeting report(summary) 2.27.2015
The 6 th was the visit to the Atsuta-jingu Shrine. Research meeting for the first time this year. Vol. 7: the Myanmar Ms.May Thiri spoke their native Myanmar, with support of Mr. Shimazu, was a presentation. You could know the real face of Myanmar in a short time.
The official name is Myanmar Federal Republic (Republic of the Union of Myanmar). Many Japanese people do not grasp or Myanmar has to the Malay Peninsula, Indo-China peninsula, located on the East side of Thailand Myanmar ?, located on the West side.
Myanmar is located to the West of Thailand. Myanmar's land area is in area of Japan's approximately 1.8 times imagine is a much larger country. Also population was 5,1410,000( 2014 years 9 months now Myanmar immigration and population Ministry interim announcement) in large land nearly half of Japan's population.
Production age population pyramid has shaped like the figure below. Unlike Japan from the bell-jar type has undergone changes rapidly, a beautiful pyramidal. Has the enviable shape.
Pyramid of working age population production age population pyramid
In per capita GDP among ASEAN countries, along with Cambodia, by the political background was most lag. However, rapid development by the implementation of economic reforms in 2011 .
In the mature Japanese nostalgic country called Burma, but Burma under British rule name, became the original country Myanmar after independent. Myanmar named came from North of the river is. There is approximately 80% of Burmese is divided into 135 minority ethnic groups, each group has a strong identity. It seems similar to Indonesia, multiracial and difficult challenges in governing.
It's announced at the common point of Myanmar and Japan was most interesting.
1. To avoid the conflict (for many people 'no' and is hard to tell).
2. Values for the patience
1. Smile than greetings and hear now the situation will be important
2. Do not use thank you the related people
Myanmar people seems to think and not preferred to confrontation. Or ask difficult or disagreeable, even it cannot be a 'hate' such as 'no' that is not the answer. Patient, as well as Japanese. Japanese also used is clearly 'no' and more and more people were less assertive person, but recently the black and white clearly means.
Conversation in Japanese without knowing the values of the Myanmar people, the Myanmar people said not 'no' and should be rather careful and should not jump to conclusions and had accepted, was not told that it was. Japan companies in Myanmar because this surface is delicate and important culture is this point firmly to understand.
Also, Myanmar people value attitude says more than, return with a smile my situation is good. It is why Myanmar's smile.
Also, not say thank you to the family. When the family is in trouble I'll do something that is obvious and seems to be. Wouldn't have liked the people and too much work, does not respect people who have a lot of stuff. Faith live in the natural body enjoys people emerge.
More complex when considered by the wave of economic development will change how people who are naive and humane way of life. Also, will likely continue strong working life to ingrain the Japan expression management in Japanese companies and is a potential factor of cultural friction, so research is needed.
I say feel the need in the Myanmar culture and lifestyle understanding and deepen economic exchanges with.
After the presentation is moved in to tofu specialty shop, Ms. May Thir , was able to hear the detailed life of Myanmar people from. Was nostalgic for me, or so I hear, the Japanese lost a humble spirit seems still alive.

Atsuta Jingu was originally founded about 1900 years ago, when the sacred sword Kusanagi-no-tsurugi,one of the Imperial symbols, was enshrined. Atsuta was chosen as the site for the shrine by Miyasuhime-no-Mikoto,wife of the Prince Yamatotakeru-no-Mikoto,who had died leaving the sword in Hikami.
We bowed at the Higashi-mon(Torii gate). Stepping on the gravel, while he mentally and physically in a purifying. Ladle on the right have to draw water, hand wash. Then ladle left hand, right hand to cleanse. In addition to your right ladle, left by water, rinse the mouth. Rinse your left hand, in the last ladle, ladle purges in the remaining water. It is what many people do not know this series of actions, the Japanese also. It experienced students.
Dr.Ogisu,Ms. Shimazu's explained hard Atsuta shrine of a brief history . Jan.17 , even though the worshippers were lining up in sando. We moved to the OSU shopping district ,had ”Ozouni”, Japan new year's landscape is indispensable. OSU specialty shops have overflowed with enthusiasm. We could quickly rushed by all sat down. Tasted of the new year in Japan, students was very popular.
Philosophical talk is always what is Japan, Japan culture and Japanese or something, at the biginning the year squeezed the opportunity to experience the Japan culture. Finally, in "karaoke" originated in Japan "self realization". I did not know foreign students to Japan's to sing well. By the way, was fascinated by Indra's singing voice. Indra's was good so he missed the road is a teacher at the University of Indonesia. As it turned out later at native University band vocals and drums was in charge is. The 5th Meeting Report (Summary) Dec.16.2014
Until before, ASEAN students had introduced their home countries, and we discussed mainly Q&A from Japanese side. But, we discussed mutual understanding of the culture in the 5th meeting. That was our original purpose. That is “Cross Culture Meeting”.
Today’s topic is “Why doesn’t Japanese people say Yes or No clearly?”.
That was a symbol of culture friction with overseas countries. We imagine ASEAN students usually will be embarrassed Japanese vague attitude.
An American cultural anthropology, Dr.Edward Hall said, each country’s culture is divided into 2 groups, high-context and low-context. The Japanese culture is referred to as one of the highest-context. High-context: primary purpose of communication is to form and develop relationships; contextual information is needed.
Therefore, it is very difficult to understand Japanese language without understanding of Japanese culture and sense of values. An ASEAN student wrote in column,
“Japanese people often say yes without approval. I don’t completely understand”. It’s true this is contradiction.
We studied the cultural background of Japanese attitude that don’t say clearly “Yes or No”. It’s a mysterious experience of ASEAN students.
When an ASEAN student asked his teacher’s opinion about his research theme in Doctoral course, he said “That is difficult”. He didn’t understand “Difficult” means Yes or No. If he said No, he can change his mind. But, he doesn’t know what he should do.
It is not unusual Japanese people communicate with overseas people without saying yes or no. We Japanese explained the reason why these happened. Our common opinions are below;
(Japanese view point)
1. If he says no, his possibilities will disappear. If he says yes, he will bear responsibility.
Both of Yes and No has risks. As the relationship with his partner is important, he says difficult.
2. Not saying No is telepathy culture. Saying No hurts somebody’s pride. Not saying No is Japanese mind. It is thinking method that is important to understand his mind not saying No. telepathy is highest-context.
3. In the company, when a boss says No, sometimes does not tell the reason. It means to think deeply and to understand 10items by hearing 1item. This is very difficult context.
4. We Japanese made WA(harmony) culture. Because,Japan is an island and has few contacts with overseas countries. If possible,we does not like to conflict and does not like to hurt other people.
5. We have gray zone between Yes and No. In this zone, Japanese does not say Yes or No.
6. In business, it is related to have authority. If he is a president, he can say Yes or No. But, if he has no authority, he can not say anything.
History scholar, the late Mr.Yuji Aida wrote about vague Japanese as below;
“To enter into & read somebody’s feelings. This is a characteristic reflect Japanese mind. Self-assertion is not good. Very small communities, assertiveness is dangerous what could disturb communal harmony in.
Knows where to know the human individual, can only modestly and still deeply calm and peaceful living. And mind subtle movements that you can imagine and compassion. To others, a caring. If it is Japanese matchless wisdom may say.
It is Europe's and Japan's State vector is exactly opposite. In Europe and assert themselves outside the pieces kept going by and ensured. But in Japan, do not go towards the outside pieces. That should not be in. It's pieces are kept by each other, caring and respect.
In this unforgettable and the Japanese takes a balance of collective and individual. Kept in pieces and the entire balance claims to each other in the aggressive individualism of the West, collided, to reach a compromise.
In Japan put out in words, always request becomes overactive. It only asserts that truly and inevitably intrinsic self justify illegal. Those words, about, iitsunori, not more resolve in carrying out training to expand in their minds. Nourishing the heart, compassion, modesty, understatement, so to be. Japanese character, elegance, precision, subtlety and the like was born here ".
(Wikipedia that want to keep saying as a Japanese male: Yuji Aida,Daiwa publishing)
The theme and want to emphasize about the Japanese people why not say YES, NO.
[Why not say Yes,No]
1. Japanese stand point of view of the opponents always and think about things.
2. I think things which are often gray zone.
3. The opponents do not feel disgusting efforts.
4. To avoid the conflict.
5. Give the opportunity to contemplate your opponent.
6. By trying to share to reduce painful of the opponent.
7. Thinks always humans are imperfect. " Sorry " called appears in the word.
8. When in the business have no rights.
[Problem Japanese people has]
1. To organize ideas for opinion from the perspective of the opponent to take time.
2. Is it takes a long time to give a vague answer.
3. Too person-centered Conference becomes vague.
4. Not to say take the stress.
5. Communications cannot be taken when opponents do not understand the euphemism.
[When interacting with overseas countries and the Japanese themselves changed]
1. Say clearly Yes, No
2. Conclusion is first
3. When you give a vague answer to explain the reason
[Good point of the Japan culture]
1. It always stands in the position of the opponent and less conflict.
2. Person-centered thinking brings many ideas.
3. Power to improve.
4. Thinking deep.
5. Often to contemplate human beings with dignity.
6. Considering the things every trust.

Summary Dinner Report Sep.22.2014
On 22 September 2014, from 16:30 to 18:00, ASEAN-Nagoya Club (ANC) organized its monthly meeting with Cambodian Students on the overview of Cambodia. The students are Mr. Nong Monin, from Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University, Mr. Pak Chanlino and Mr. Lim Lyhong, from Graduate School of Law, Nagoya University.
The purpose of this meeting was to provide the basic understanding about Cambodian geography, political history, economy and sightseeing spots in Cambodia to the Japanese participants (also the graduates of Nagoya University), which presented by Mr. Nong Monin. There was an open discussion after presentation when the members could make any questions and comments.
In the last point of presentation, Mr. Monin presented his dream. He would like to improve Cambodian economy, and he wishes to see Cambodian would leave from poverty line. Japanese pointed out the fact that economic development would have negative side-effects (in the case of Japan, rapid economic growth caused a lot of mental diseases and suicide, weakened family ties, and extended inequality). We agreed that it is necessary to tackle other priority issues in the Cambodian society, not just economic growth, for example tradition and culture conservation. Improving the standard of education is also discussed as the major route to build a society that is based on justice and equity.
At the end of the meeting, Cambodian students were introduced the Japanese traditional food, Sushi. There was a friendly talk on many topics related to culture, daily life, and social issues of both nations. All members would like to continue to work together in order to build a strong relationship and network for future business cooperation.
